Mangaholix Cosplay Collision

COSPLAY COLLISION RINGSIDE TOURNAMENT
This Individual Cosplay Contest will be held on the 2nd day of Mangaholix Manga Mania Convention 2009: November 22, 2009 (Sunday).

GENERAL RULES AND GUIDELINES

• There will be a maximum limit of 64 unique contestants for the Cosplay Collision: Ringside Tournament. Unlike previous M3Con cosplay contests, this limit will NOT be increased to accommodate additional contestants at the event.

• Unique Contestant - The tournament will only allow 64 unique characters to be portrayed in the whole contest. There will be no repeat, double, or mirror characters. Each preregistration will be served on a first-come-first-serve basis then served on a first-character-first-pre-reservation basis. If someone preregisters a character before you do, you may choose another character that has not been preregistered yet.

• The cosplay contest will be based on a single-round tournament-structured, versus-battle system where contestants from 2 sides face off and interact onstage with each other whilst in character; for one minute (60 seconds).

• Interactions can be almost anything, from lively, animated banter to dynamic mock fights. The key is to remain completely in character while dynamically acting and reacting to your opponent's acting. This aims to test the cosplayer's acting skills, showmanship, and character knowledge.

• Judges will vote the winner per round by declaring their choice as either the contestant from the BLUE or RED corner. The contestant with the most number of judge's votes wins that particular round and moves up the tournament grid.

• Judges will evaluate the contestants based on 2 general criteria: (1) Accuracy and believability of the contestant's performance in portraying his/her character. (2) Accuracy and craftsmanship of the contestant's costume and/or ensemble.

• The tournament will be divided into 4 brackets (A-D) that each start with 16 seeded contestants. Each bracket is divided into 4 rounds: Eliminations, Preliminaries, Semi-Finals, and the Finals rounds. The 4 winners of each bracket will then move on to face each other in the Grand Finals. The tournament structure will be as follows:
o Seeded Bracket Structure (for each of 4 brackets):
Eliminations – 8/16 contestants will qualify for the Preliminaries.
Quarter Finals – 4/16 contestants will qualify for the Semi-Finals.
Semi-Finals – 2/4 contestants will qualify for the Finals
Finals – ½ contestants will qualify for the Grand Finals
o Grand Finals Structure (for the final 4 qualifiers):
Round 1 – 2/4 contestants will qualify for the Final Round.
Round 2 – tie breaker round for overall 3rd place between non-qualifiers of Round 1.
Final Round – final showdown to decide the Cosplay Collision Ringside Tournament Champion.

• Knockout Rounds – During any random round, the judges and/or cosplay team may decide to add a random twist by inserting a participating Cosplay Marshal/s, throwing in a random prop for flavor, asking the character a question, and so on. The key thing to remember is to STAY IN CHARACTER at all times and react to the random twists and additions as you believe your character would. A contestant’s reaction during a Knockout Round may be the deciding factor on whether he/she wins or loses that round. Stay on your toes, and stay in character.

• Contestants will be randomly drawn and seeded into the tournament grid. Each contestant will be placed at either a BLUE or RED corner which will represent which side of the stage they will begin their performance from. Contestants must start at their respective sides regardless of their intended entrance choreography.

• All contestants are required to be present and accounted for at the stage area 30 minutes before the contest is scheduled to begin (specific schedule to be announced). Absent or tardy contestants may be disqualified from the contest.

• The contestant on the RED corner ALWAYS initiates the interaction.

• The Cosplay Marshals will signal the contestant on the BLUE corner that he/she may initiate the interaction only IF their opponent on the RED corner has not initiated any interaction after 10 seconds have passed from the start of the round. The BLUE corner contestant must wait for the signal of the Cosplay Marshal before initiating any interaction.

• Contestants are highly discouraged from performing random lines and/or actions that their chosen character would not normally do. Deliberate miss-portrayal will lessen the contestant’s chances of winning that round and he/she may also risk disqualification. If both contestants deliberately portray their characters in uncharacteristic fashions, they both risk disqualification.

• Contestants are highly discouraged from any inaction or non-performance. In the event that both contestants still have not begun any performance after 20 seconds of being onstage, official Cosplay Marshals may be prompted to join the contestants onstage to initiate a performance or interaction. Contestants who still do not perform after being prompted by the Cosplay Marshals, risk disqualification.

• All contestants must keep their performances decent, safe, and civil at all times as per the General Rules of Conduct.

• Judges decisions are final.

Rules and guidelines are subject to additions and/or modifications without prior notice.
